Review: Artists Rooms

Too much repetition, not enough interrogation

The exhibition's concept is that a new collection of internationally renowned artists—Alex Katz, Andy Warhol, Francesca Woodman, Ellen Gallagher, Vija Celmins and Damien Hirst—are exhibited within their own room, to be comprehended independently. The display approach is simple, providing a bite-size retrospective, a crib-sheet to major artists. But there just isn't enough. For example, Warhol's room has a collection of his Stitched Photographs – prints of the same image woven together, with thread hanging as testament to the artist's touch. The series nicely plays homeliness against our preconceived knowledge of Warhol, as mighty critic of pop culture and celebrity. But then you leave the room and there's nothing more.

The problem is all the more acute in the rooms of lesser known artists – Ellen Gallagher's space has only three pieces: two large paintings, both covered with inexplicable silver lips and DeLuxe, a grid of collaged magazine images of black women, a conception that denies their identity. Once again, that's it – though this time, the less informed experience becomes unintentionally alienating.

Contrastingly, Damien Hirst takes up an inordinate amount of space. Some of it is brilliant – Away From The Flock is worth seeing, and his self-portrait With Dead Head highlights Hirst's morbid fascination superbly. But then there's a Spot Painting, a Spun, a Butterfly one, each supposedly conflicting life and death, and pieces from Pharmacy which show he's replaced God with the modern myths of science – man overcoming death through pharmaceuticals. We get it. Don't labour the point. There needs to be more balance – there's too much repetition, needless padding and not enough interrogation. This is somewhat unfair – after all, it is not a retrospective and as such cannot hope to enjoy the same freedom and exploration. What's more, it's a free exhibition with some major names. However, ARTIST ROOMS lacks enough substance to justify the long trek.

3/5 stars.

Day 1: I know no-one is listening (reading) but...
2009-03-30 13:18:19
Hello, (Every)one. Bearing in mind I am currently engaged with dissertation work, I thought it best to start a daily diary to keep me writing and get my mind in gear. I have literally just discovered the Collings and Herrin Podcast and have spent the last few days catching up with them (they are an hour long, and they have 56 to date. they do one a week, and I am on number 40. That is how sad my life has become)

It's very good and very funny - Richard Herring of course being a very quality comedian, and Andrew Collins, a questionable film critic and writer (he actually enjoyed sex and the city. I honestly watched it on fast forward and it was appalling).
Anyway I am keeping this up as a diary so that a) I keep writing b) I might come up with some stand up material and c) that I do things interesting in my day in order to make this blog more interesting. I am sick and tired of doing fuck all every day, so here goes.

IT may not be good, and it may be long but. Well fuck it. wish me luck.

So theres this Douglas Gordon piece called between my mouth and your ear and basically its a dark blue room with wires ansd speakers playing tracks from Glasgow when he was in his mummys tummy. I just found out what was number one whilse I was being born. Nothing nearly as cool as what he got.

Maybe thats why I'm not an artist.

Review: P*Belcampo: Retrospective
2009-03-17 14:23:43
As far as second year art college exhibitions go, P* Belcampo has an interesting concept: choose at random one from amongst your ranks, and create an exhibition as if retrospective of their artistic achievement. Though the idea brings a sense of collective to proceedings, it is only of passing importance; the pretence is even dropped within the exhibition itself, as the original artists are revealed.

The work of each individual tends to feel unique to each student's own ideas, but this lack of cohesion highlights how good the work actually is. On the surface, P* Belcampo is a typical student display – dry humour, sly comment and even the now almost obligatory dead animals make a fleeting appearance. Taking centre stage, however, is a piece consisting of rubber bands which flow across the immense space, eliciting a tactile response – the desire not only to touch, but to leap, as if it were a trampoline hammock.

Locked away in cabinets, a dismembered synthesizer presents itself – presenting exactly what requires a far higher intellect than my own. Nearby, the wonderful Holstein Freisian Procession exploits the pop up book with delicate skill. Other highlights include painted refrigerator doors which feel oddly homely and nostalgic, and a thread series which juxtaposes this re-appropriation of the everyday, with the geometric patterns of Sol LeWitt.

One work reminiscent of Robert Rauschenberg's Erased De Kooning is hung with its front to the wall – a welcome return for anti-institutional discourse. Those with a far more subdued taste are also catered for, with some more than accomplished paintings, both abstract and figurative, with a fascinating mix of colour, pattern and style.

Of course, the exhibition itself doesn't rival the various retrospectives made famous at larger commercial institutions, the Tates and National Galleries of this world; there just isn't enough exploration of the concept it attempts to employ, no united theme, no apparent attempt to conceptualise the artist and explore what that would mean. However, as a document of fledgling talent it is a wonderful exposition. Free your mind of Belcampo's retrospective allusions, and the art on display opens itself to you, as quirky, thought provoking and, overall, enjoyable.

nb rubber bands piece called "woven space" by Daniela Justiniano is not part of P* Belcampo exhibition, but is part of "in between", an exhibition of MFA students of Painting, Intermedia, sculpture and Tapestry.

2009-03-08 13:22:31

To those who don't already listen our radio show, you won't have noticed a few new features added to the hitch and doug show arsenal. Goal of the Week' involves viewers (or listeners as they are known in the radio world) being given an aim for their week - and this week, they were challenged to find out conclusively - do Heinz Beans mean beans? I've said beans so much now in my life, i feel ill...
These are the beans we were testing:
Hitch and Doug Bring on the Beans

And this was our grand reveal at the end... oh the glamour!
Hitch and Doug Bring on the Beans

And of course, poor hitch and doug were FORCED to then put all the remaining beans into a big pan and eat it all in one go like the fatty bum bums they are
Hitch and Doug Bring on the Beans

And the winner is... well you'll have to watch the video to find out (its at the top!) or why not listen to the live show this monday 1 til 2.30pm. Excellent!
